MUMBAI, India (CMC) – Captain Darren Sammy says the West Indies team is backing exciting all-rounder Andre Russell to perform in the T20 World Cup, despite reports that he could face a suspension for missing three drug tests.

Sammy says the Windies are confident Russell will play in the full competition and create an impact similar to his exploits in T20 tournaments around the world.

Russell, 27, has figured prominently, from Australia’s Big Bash to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has led several franchises to title honours.

“We as a team have supported Russell,” Sammy told reporters a day ahead of West Indies’ opening T20 WC clash against England at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

“We are confident he will be taking part in the full tournament and having an impact like he’s done in the last four tournaments he’s played (in) around the world”.

While there has been no confirmation from authorities, Jamaica Observer has reported that the hearing for Russell to answer charges has been set for March 23.

The Jamaican cricketer is unlikely to attend the hearing, however, as he is currently campaigning with the West Indies.

Sammy said the reports surrounding Russell hadn’t affected the squad.

“We always have setbacks,” he said.

“We thrive on things like that to use that as motivation to go out and play our sport really well.”

West Indies will also play South Africa, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in the group stages as they bid for a second T20 World Cup title.
