Fletcher, Vassell lead Faulkland FC to big win
MONTEGO BAY, St James — After a period of indifferent results, Faulkland FC are back to their free coring ways, blanking 10-man Mountain Villa 6-0 in their St James Football Association /SandalsATL Senior League third-round game at Jarrett Park on Friday.
Led by national Under-20 invitees Jordaine Fletcher – who scored a hat trick – and Peter-Lee Vassell, who scored twice, Faulkland FC shook off a run of subpar results and improved to second place on 24 points, two behind leaders Tomorrow’s People, with a game in hand.
Fletcher and Vassell joined Tomorrow’s People’s Leon Irvin on eight goals each at the top of the scoring chart, with Irving scoring five times in his team’s last two games.
Tomorrow’s People stayed ahead of Faulkland FC with a 2-1 win over fancied Melbourne FC at Granville Community Centre, while Norwood Strikers and Montego Bay United Under-21 played out a 0-0 draw at the UDC field.
At Jarrett Park, Mountain Villa’s Gregory Kerr was sent off late in the game but after the damage was already done, and his team was deep in a hole.
Vassell gave Faulkland FC the lead in the 35th minute and Fletcher added a second five minutes later as they led 2-0 at the break.
Vassell then made it 3-0 in the 58th minute before Fletcher completed his hat-trick with goals in the 64th and 70th minutes, as the Mountain Villa defence broke down under the relentless pressure.
Courtney Allen, a late substitution, added the sixth goal when he powered home a shot from close range in the 80th minute.
Irvin continued his good run when he gave Tomorrow’s People the lead in the 40th minute and Marcel Whyte added a second early in the second half, in the 48th minute.
Rayon Cameron made it a tense final 14 minutes after he pulled one back for Melbourne FC in the 76th minute.
