PNP mourns former MP Arthur Nelson
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) is mourning the passing of former Member of Parliament for St James West Central, Arthur Nelson, describing him as a devoted public servant whose quiet dignity and genuine commitment to his constituents left a lasting mark on public life.
Nelson died at the age of 91 after what the PNP described as a life dedicated to his profession, his party and his country.
The PNP said Nelson, a professional engineer by training, brought rigour, integrity and practical good sense to his parliamentary service. He represented St James West Central after winning consecutive general elections in 1993 and 1997.
In a statement on Sunday, the PNP said Nelson was a man of remarkable humility.
“In an era when appearances often matter more than actions, he was known to take the bus to Parliament, a quiet but telling statement about who he was and the values he held. He never sought to place himself above the people he served,” the party said.
The PNP also highlighted Nelson’s enduring commitment to the party, noting that his service continued long after he left parliamentary office. During the 2020 general election campaign, he returned to St James West Central to support PNP candidates, demonstrating what the party described as his lifelong and unwavering dedication to both the organisation and the people of the constituency.
The party extended condolences to his wife, Barbara, their children, Shaun, Mark, and Andrea, as well as other relatives, friends, former colleagues, and the residents of St James West Central.
“Arthur Nelson served with honour. He will be remembered with great affection and the highest respect. May he rest in eternal peace,” the PNP said.
