X5 Marks the Spot
If you are searching for that one vehicle that provides everything, from the intangibles to just pure practicality, then the 2016 BMW X5 could easily be on top of that list.
Now in its third generation, the X5 has comfortably joined the ranks of products from a company whose tagline is ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’. Physically imposing, the X5 has aged into a handsome shape for a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), but exceeds expectation once the driver drops down into the comfortable full-powered leather seats. At first, the multi-function steering wheel, also leather wrapped, seems more set towards a sport car than an SUV. However, a simple press of the accelerator rockets the X5 forward, tantalising drivers even more with sport mode while turning things up. From there, the mechanicals easily deliver upon the tagline with direct accurate feel from the electronic steering, seamless shifts from the eight-speed automatic gearbox, and the surefootedness of four-wheel drive.
Then it hits, even without engaging Eco mode; a quick glance at the LED central display pops up an impossible figure for estimated gas mileage. For all its speed, space, comfort, refinement, and multitude of convenience features, the X5 is totally practical in its xDrive30d trim. That’s because the ‘d’ stands for diesel. Nestled in the nose of the X5 is a 3-litre twin power turbo straight six that gives away little to its heritage. With the advent of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, the X5 is able to dispel all the old negatives of older diesels. There’s no smoke, no start up rattle, and from behind the wheel the six cylinder purrs like its petrol counterpart. Yet it delivers mileage numbers that will keep owners from emptying their wallets at every fill up.
For those wanting to be more frugal, but still want to enjoy all the premium features such as a panoramic sunroof, a powered split rear tailgate, rear parking sensors, three driving modes and keyless entry, they can opt for the 2-litre four-cylinder version of the X5.
