Met Service downgrades flash flood warning for eastern parishes
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Meteorological (Met) Service of Jamaica has downgraded the flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas of St Thomas, Portland, St Mary, and St Ann to a flash flood watch, effective 7:00 am tomorrow.
A news release from the Met Service this afternoon said the flash flood watch for remaining parishes has been discontinued though a trough remains across Jamaica and the central Caribbean.
It said satellite imagery indicates that the main area of rainfall activity has shifted south of Jamaica; and radar reports indicate that light to moderate showers occurred across the island today.
The forecast is for isolated showers, which could be heavy at times, to affect mainly eastern parishes tonight.
Marine interests are advised to exercise caution as seas conditions will deteriorate in the vicinity of showers and thunderstorms due to gusty winds.
A flash flood watch means that flash flooding is possible and residents are advised to take precautionary measures, keep informed by listening to further releases from the Meteorological Service and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a warning is issued.
The Meteorological Service said it will continue to monitor the situation.
