The National Drag Racing Circuit (NDRC) held its second meet of the year, Drag Racing Challenge #2, at Vernamfield, Clarendon, last Sunday, continuing its pledge to improve the sport.

“There were 159 racers at Supligen Drag Challenge #2 in association with Castrol,” Stephen Gunter, executive member — NDRC, told

Gunter said the perfect weather provided a full day of racing on which the NDRC was able to complete its full programme more than 30 minutes ahead of schedule. Sunday saw the full suite of upgrades brought out at the Test & Tune earlier this month performing well under race conditions, the first of which was the addition of Traction Compound to the venue’s concrete surface.

“With the racing surface now treated with Traction Compound, many racers recorded new personal best performances,” he said.

Dean Shaw, one of the sport’s prominent names, praised the move.

“It is a progressive move forward,” he explained.

However, he added that in the case of the big power machines like his Chevrolet Camaro, it would be a while before there’d be enough rubber to make those of similar ilk go faster.

The day also saw Mandeville’s Xavia Murray pushing the limits of front-wheel drive in local drag racing. He posted a new quarter-mile record for the class of 9.926 seconds.
