KINGSTON, Jamaica –Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange has expressed shock and disbelief at the passing of the Gleaner Company’s veteran journalist, Gary Spaulding, only days after the passing of his colleague Glenroy Sinclair.

“I am shocked and lost for words. Gary was someone who I knew personally and with whom I have worked extensively over the years while he was at RJR and at the Gleaner. Despite both having very demanding jobs, we have been able to maintain an unquestionable friendship that I will forever hold dear to my heart,” Minister Grange said.

Spaulding has been hailed by Minister Grange as a “selfless individual” and a journalist who dedicated the last 20 years of his career to the development of journalism in Jamaica.

“I am truly saddened by news of Gary’s death, he had a genuine interest in helping to advance the way reporting was done in Jamaica – ensuring our citizens are provided with fair, objective and credible information,” she said.

“Gary covered just about everything during his illustrious career. He had a reputation of tackling tough issues, uncovering the truth and keeping us politicians in line,” the minister added.

According to reports, Spaulding’s body was found at his Hughenden home Monday afternoon, mere days after the death of his colleague, Sinclair, who suffered a massive heart attack while at work.

In offering her heartfelt condolences, Minister Grange said: “The Jamaican media landscape has lost one of its most potent members. Gary will be greatly missed and my thoughts are with his family, the Gleaner family, friends and media colleagues as they go through this period of grief.”

Minister Grange added that she hoped the contribution of these journalists to their profession and the nation will not be lost to future generations and called on the Press Association of Jamaica to ensure that the good that they have done will be inscribed for the reference of future generations of journalists.

She urged his family and media associates to find solace in the fact that he lived a full life through his passion — writing — which has undoubtedly impacted the lives of thousands.

Minister Grange also urged young and aspiring journalists to be guided by seniors like Spaulding who until his death, remained committed to the development of journalism in Jamaica.
