Women’s beach volleyballers fail in Olympic bid
Despite winning three of their five matches in the fourth round of the Beach Olympic Qualification, the Jamaican Women’s Volleyball team failed to qualify for the Olympics games, scheduled for Rio, Brazil, in August.
The Jamaicans were placed seventh out of 12 teams participating in the qualifiers held in Sonora, Mexico.
Costa Rica finished as the winners, with the host nation Mexico in second spot and Cuba in third spot. Guatemala (fourth), Nicaragua (fifth) and Trinidad and Tobago (sixth) finished ahead of Jamaica, with Barbados rounding off the top eight. Only Costa Rica, the winners, have advanced automatically to Rio.
The Jamaicans started their campaign on a winning note after defeating Suriname 3-1 in the opening games before they went down 0-3 to Costa Rica in their second match.
Jamaica kept their slim hopes alive when they blanked the lesser fancied St Lucia 3-0 in match three, but had their slim chance dashed when they were clipped 3-2 by neighbours Trinidad and Tobago in the fourth match.
The Jamaicans then ended their campaign on a high, beating Barbados 2-0.
