Aspire to be the best
Aspire Flex Weekend celebrates its fourth anniversary with five signature events. The series unfolds on July 28 and ends August 1 in Kingston and Portmore, St Catherine.
“The party series has been redefined as a prestigious dancehall festival, as a true celebration of Jamaican culture during Independence. The standard of events has been elevated and includes Chug It, which is the most successful event that continues to dominate the Independence period in Jamaica,” promoter Andrew ‘French’ Wright told
Splash.
Making its debut is the Jitterbug, which is a Best Of The ’90s event. French said there have been numerous requests for this retro party.
“The 90s was a peak period for dancehall music and culture, so it’s only natural that people gravitate to that. Kingston is the capital of Jamaica, but also the capital of dancehall music. People come here to develop their talents in that area so we only found it suitable to host the party series in Kingston,” he explained.
The Aspire Flex Weekend schedule is:
Club Manhattan — Thursday, July 28 (Fiction Night Club)
Luc Belaire Supreme — Friday, July 29 (The Palms)
Jitterbug, Best of the 90s — Saturday, July 30 (St. Lucia Avenue Carpark)
Supreme Beach — Sunday, July 31 (Palisadoes Harbour Beach)
Chug It— Monday, August 1 (Sugarman’s Beach)
When it started in 2011, Flex Weekend had 10 events. French commented on the reduction.
“The number of events was adjusted to elevate the look and feel of the series. Flex Weekend is ‘all the way up’ this year. We’re on another level, so that means only the most successful promoters in Jamaica are allowed to be associated with the series after the registration process. All organisers have to meet certain criteria for the standard of their events. Therefore, only the events of the highest calibre form part of Flex Weekend,” he said.
Flex Weekend is powered by Aspire Financial Services Limited. Among the top-tier DJs who will be on show are ZJ Liquid, Craig Ross and ZJ Smurf, along w Hyperactive sound system. Dancehall artistes Tifa and Aidonia are billed to perform.
