New security measures for Barbados courts
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Barbados authorities have announced new security measures for all magistrates’ courts across the island one month after a young man attempted to enter a court with a loaded 9mm firearm.
Registrar of the Supreme Court, Barbara Cooke-Alleyne, said under the new measures, which went into effect immediately, only people with legitimate business will be allowed onto the courts’ premises. She said security personnel will reserve the right to deny entry to any person seeking to enter onto those premises and in addition, items such as cigarette lighters, scissors, knives or anything which may be used as a weapon will be confiscated.
The new rules also indicate that people conducting business at the courts must comply with the established dress code.
Last month, a routine stop by a security guard led to the discovery of the gun that was reportedly tucked between the leg and buttocks of a 21-year-old man, who had been casually dressed in three-quarter “cut-up” jeans and a white T-shirt.
