Tavares-Finson to head National Gallery of Jamaica
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange said the recent appointment of Senator Tom Tavares-Finson as chairman of the new board of management of the National Gallery of Jamaica (NGJ) forms part of the ministry’s overall thrust to further develop and promote all aspects of culture in Jamaica.
In a release from the ministry, Grange said that this thrust will be further enhanced through the appointment of industry-related stakeholders, technocrats and practitioners to state boards.
“Our aim is to ensure that the people who are called to serve are willing and able and have a vested interest in the continuation and promotion of the many facets of Jamaica’s rich, vibrant and illustrious cultural legacy,” Grange said.
The minister added that she is confident that Senator Tavares-Finson and the new board he leads will steer the NGJ in a new direction that is in keeping with global trends as it relates to the development of art and galleries.
The National Gallery of Jamaica was established in 1974.
