Woman accused of robbing cop after motor vehicle accident

Covering the Courts

A woman accused of stealing a policeman’s cellular phone and driving away with the device following an accident involving their cars, is to be tried in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on September 26.

Charged with larceny from the person is Nicola Montaque.

The court heard that on the day in question both persons were involved in an accident on Duke Street in downtown Kingston when the complainant drove away.

However, the court heard that the complainant drove down the accused and caused her to stop.

But allegations are that when the police stopped his car, the complainant grabbed his cellular phone and drove away with it.

Following the incident, Montaque was arrested and charged.

Last Wednesday when the matter was mentioned, Montaque’s lawyer, Jonathan Williams, told Judge Pusey: “There are a lot of complexities surrounding this case.”

“What is so complex about stealing a phone?” the judge asked.

Williams in reply said that it was his client who actually had driven down the police and that she had taken his phone after he had threatened to take photographs of her but had thrown it back at the police.

The police, however, told the judge that he had not got back his phone.

The lawyer also told the court that his client was abused and threatened by the policeman.

The matter was subsequently scheduled for trial and Montaque’s bail was extended.
