KINGSTON, Jamaica — Commissioner of Police Dr Carl Williams a short while ago disclosed that Senior Superintendent of Police Steve McGregor will be called in to assist the efforts being made to curtail the upsurge of violence in West Kingston.

In a Twitter chat using the hashtag #TalkBack, the commissioner responded to questions from users of the social media website on Tuesday.

In a tweet, OBSERVER ONLINE asked Williams whether there are plans to re-assign SSP McGregor to the Kingston Western police division in light of the recent flare-up of violence?

“He is now on vacation,” the commissioner responded from his Twitter handle @DrCarlWilliams. “When he returns, he will have a role in policing Kingston Western.”

However, the commissioner did not specify what role McGregor will be playing or whether he will again head the division that seemingly enjoyed peaceful conditions under his watch.

Up to last year March, SSP McGregor was the commanding officer for the Kingston Western police division.

When news surfaced last year March that he would be transferred to St James, residents blocked sections of major thoroughfares and protested against the move.

“We want McGregor, a him set the trend and bring back the peace,” one woman shouted then.

Despite the protests, McGregor was transferred to the St James Police Division in early April, and Senior Superintendent Michael Smith was assigned to temporarily lead the division.

Currently, Howard Chambers is the commanding officer for the Kingston Western Police Division, while SSP McGregor is assigned to the Territorial Operations Portfolio.

In recent weeks, there has been an upsurge of violence in Kingston Western, with a spate of shooting incidents.

Police theorise the violence is related to gang warfare over turf.
