Tropical Storm Ian forms south-east of Bermuda
HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) – Bermudans have been alerted to Tropical Storm Ian, the ninth tropical storm of the Atlantic Hurricane season.
The Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said the system, located 1,140 miles to the south-east of the island, was packing sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and moving towards the north-west.
NHC said it could start strengthening on Tuesday night but was of no immediate threat to land.
The Bermuda Weather Service said Ian’s closest point of approach to the island in the next 72 hours will be 530 miles to the east on Wednesday.
Forecasters were also keeping an eye on a disturbance near the Bahamas which has been given a 10 per cent chance of becoming a tropical storm over the next five days.
However, they said it could dump heavy rainfall on parts of the Bahamas on Monday and parts of Florida on Tuesday.
Last month Bermudians breathed a sigh of relief as three Atlantic storms bypassed the island.
