KickRaux brings the flavour home
DJ/producer KickRaux has been busy making a name for himself internationally. Having produced remixes for high-profile acts including Jay-Z, Ty Dolla Sign, Major Lazer, Machel Montano and Busta Rhymes, he recently dropped a beat with a Jamaican flavour.
The song is Feelin U, featuring American rapper Tyga, Demarco, Ayo Jay and Doctor. It is from the album Forward by KickRaux and Capital Xtra DJ Ras Kwame.
“At the moment the song is all over radio in Africa, London and other parts of Europe, Canada. The song has a lot of buzz internationally and the way it’s growing it’s going to be one of the biggest songs in the world,” KickRaux boasted in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.
KickRaux, 27, migrated to the United States at age 16. He grew up in Waterford, Portmore.
“Even though I had taken piano lessons as a child, I didn’t get my start in music until after college. My first production was for a local artiste in Los Angeles and it ended up being picked up by one of the mix- show DJs and started getting played on the radio in that city,” he said.
KickRaux learned the music production ropes from Neal Pogue, best known for his work with Grammy-winning rap group, Outkast.
“On any given day, Neal would be working on stuff for artistes of many genres, so my time with him taught me a lot and helped me become a versatile producer. I was fortunate enough to have a great mentor who taught me about more than just notes and scales that you learn in school,” he explained.
“My real music studies came during my early time interning and assisting at studios where I learned that a great song is the result of not just great production, but also the songwriting and how well the artiste fits on the production.”
His first production was the Jay-Z remix of MIA’s XXXO for her album MAYA. Other credits include the Major Lazer remix of Kranium’s Nobody Has to Know; Machel Montano’s Bring the Beat and Bend Down Pause (featuring Runtown and WizKid); Chronixx and Kabaka Pyramid’s Lyrical Anomaly (from the mix tape Accurate); and T A O for Asian K-pop act ZTAO.
KickRaux is currently collaborating with a number of Jamaican acts.
“I’m working on a lot of projects in dancehall behind the scenes. I’m releasing productions featuring Masicka, Jahmiel, Jah Vinci, Demarco, new artist Neeqah. I also just sent some crazy productions to Ayo Jay, Kranium and Sean Paul for their projects. Konshens voiced something for me as well and I am working with some of my producer friends in the dancehall world TJ Records, Blade from Social Yaad Records and Chromatic,” he said.
