Jamaica College (JC) grabbed Group B of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW Manning Cup football competition by its proverbial neck with 6-0 defeated of Vauxhall High at JC grounds at Old Hope Road, yesterday.

Goals from O’Quinn Robinson in the 11th minute (penalty), Orlando Brown in the 19th and 30th, substitute Donovan Dawkins in the 34th, Duhaney Williams in the 52nd and O’Keefe Cunningham in the 89th minute put JC in a commanding position after registering their third win for a maximum nine points with goal difference of nine goals.

Both teams started at a lively clip, but JC always looked the more composed team and after 11 minutes they took the lead.

Following the goal, the Old Hope Road boys continued to dictate terms as Brown continued to work his magic on the left wing.

With another 15 minutes remaining in the first half, Brown worked his way into the area from where he blasted a rapier like right footed shot past goalkeeper Robert Henry to the roof of the Vauxhall goal for his second and his team’s third goal.

Brown had earlier put JC two goals to the good after goalkeeper Henry had let slip from his grasp a ball that he should have held on to, and an onrushing Brown put the ball across the goal line.

Dawkins, who scored last year’s winning championship goal for JC, beat Henry for the fourth time in the half.

However, the death of one of their former colleagues, Dominic James, who was at the time playing for St George’s College in a similar ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup fixture against Excelsior High at Stadium East, seemed to put a damper on things.

Considering the disturbing news team manager Ian Forbes was buoyed by the win.

“We are very pleased with the win; the chemistry is improving day, by day and we are very pleased with how things are going. We are under no pressure.

“The players know that whenever they come to Jamaica College they have to work hard. We have a system here to which they have to comply and have to adapt to the school’s rules and regulations. We are getting the best from them as we are seeing marked improvement game by game”, Forbes reiterated.

“It was a tough game”, Vauxhall High’s Keith McTavish said. “It is young team compound with a day before the competition started wolmer’s took away our captain and this seemed to have impacted negatively on the spirit of the team. So much so that when the team went down to an early goal penalty the team dropped arms and they were tentative and dejected after this.

“However, they are young players and we are going to motivate them as we are not giving up hope as we can still make it through should we win our next game,” said a hopeful McTavish.
