In what was basically a repeat performance of their first-leg contest, Excelsior High once again trounced Tarrant High 4-0 in Group A return-leg action of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW Manning Cup competition yesterday.

Substitute Tyane Wilson led the way with a brace in the 65th and 70th minutes, with Voshawn Williams (23rd) and Alain Skerritt (88th) grabbing the others in the lopsided contest at Molynes Field.

The win propelled Excelsior to the top of the five-team standing on 10 points, with a superior goal difference over Greater Portmore. The latter also moved to 10 points following a 2-1 deafeat of Tivoli Gardens High in the other group fixture in St Catherine.

Group favourites St George’s College have slipped to third on nine points and will not be in action until Saturday.

It was one-way traffic from the first whistle at Molynes Field, with the Mountain View Avenue-based Excelsior settling very briskly to dictate the pace of the game. They went to the break 1-0 up after Williams’ intended cross from the left side of the park fortuitously bounced past everyone and into the back of the net.

Excelsior produced a more commanding display on the resumption with Coach Shavar Thomas inserting three of his more seasoned players in the dreadlocked Thorne Buchanan, Wilson and Ryan Spence.

The trio wasted little time in impacting the contest, as Wilson got on the scoresheet from close range five minutes past the hour mark, after connecting with a well-timed through pass from Spence.

Wilson completed his brace and sent Excelsior 3-0 up, when he capitalised on a defensive error at the far post and literally walked the ball into the net past the hapless Demario Riley in goal for Tarrant.

Skerritt then put the icing on the cake two minutes from time, when he picked up a loose ball on the left flank and drove home a well-struck left-footed shot.

Coach Thomas was pleased with the performance after fielding a second-tier team comprising mostly fringe players.

“We got three points today (yesterday) on a tough field; sometimes when the opponents are a little less than us it causes a lack of concentration. We got some chances that we should have put away, but nevertheless we got three points and four goals, so I am happy with that. We are just building as we go along and everybody will get a chance, that is how the game is,” Thomas told journalists in a post-game interview.

“We are most definitely hoping to stay at the top because the vision is to be in the FLOW Super Cup and the Walker Cup and even to win the Manning Cup, but I tell my players, to win we have to simply go through St George’s College and Jamaica College,” he added.

His counterpart, Francois Fenton, took some positives from the contest.

“We have some serious injury issues and we had to reconstruct the side so inexperience has contributed to our losses all season. But there are a lot of positives to take from this game because a lot of the younger players gained some experience here to build on their confidence going forward,” he noted.
