KINGSTON Jamaica — Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Karl Samuda is urging farmers to take the threat of Hurricane Matthew seriously.

The minister said though the Category 4 hurricane is not forecast to make landfall in Jamaica, it still has the potential to do significant damage.

“Remember, the system is large and moving very slowly. Even if we don’t get hurricane force winds we will get some tropical storm force winds and we will not get away from heavy rains,” he said.

According to forecasts, the system could dump as much as 20 inches of rain in sections of the island.

“Flooding is a serious risk. If you have not done so already, finalise your preparations. Take steps to safeguard your loved ones, property and livestock. This is not something to take lightly,” said Minister Samuda.

Minister Samuda also urged fishermen, who have not already done so, to seek safe harbour.

“No catch is worth your lives. Come in,” said the minister.
