Marcus Garvey Drive reopens
THE National Works Agency (NWA) has reopened Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston to vehicular traffic, following Monday’s closure to mitigate the impact of Hurricane Matthew on the works now under way in the area.
In a news release yesterday, manager of communication and customer services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said that the temporary drain constructed Monday in preparation for the hurricane will remain.
The drain runs across the road in the vicinity of Industrial Terrace and is expected to channel excess water away from business establishments, should the Tivoli Gully overflow because of the improper disposal of garbage and debris in the channel. The channel is currently being widened.
Shaw said that the new arrangements will be in place for the next two weeks and that motorists using Marcus Garvey Drive in the vicinity of Industrial Terrace should exercise caution and obey the posted warning signs.
In the meantime, work is expected to start today to reconstruct a section of the Gordon Town main road in St Andrew.
The road has been reduced to a single lane resulting from the collapse of a retaining wall. Just over $27 million is to be spent over the next 90 days to have the structure rebuilt and the road reopened to accommodate two lanes of traffic.
