Guyana Opposition claims lack of confidence in Granger administration
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — The main Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Monday said there is a “crisis of confidence” in the country and blamed the ruling coalition government of President David Granger for the situation.
“There is a pervasive national sentiment that the Granger administration is clueless, incompetent and in a state of drift. The real problem in Guyana is not mysterious and can be found in the modus operandi of the coalition administration which is at odds with the Guyanese character, customs, and mores,” PPP general secretary and former home affairs minister Clement Rohee told a news conference.
He said the coalition, comprising A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC), had not been able to bring the “good life” to Guyana as had been promised during the campaign for the May 2015 general election.
He called on President Granger in his address to Parliament on October 10 to address the issues affecting the national population.
Rohee argued that the “militaristic-command style” rule by government has dampened and killed the spirit and the various stakeholders in the country, including the working class, small businesses and farming community.
“Political instability, a lack of understanding the Guyanese business culture, the command style administration, putting a break on transformative projects initiated by the PPP/C administration, the absence of developmental inspired initiatives, the lack of predictability and uncertainty in the future; poor understanding and appreciation of the socio-economic attributes of vulnerable groups such as the Amerindian communities and the impact of misguided socio-economic policies on their livelihoods have all contributed to the crisis of confidence,” Rohee said.
He told reporters that this would “inevitably result in a further decline in the living standard of all Guyanese and a collapse of the economy reminiscent of the Burnham/Greenidge administration”.
Rohee said Guyanese had lost confidence in the future and that the business community is reeling from the monumental losses.
He urged support for the PPP to return to power through free and fair elections supervised by a reformed Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and reformed electoral process.
