KINGSTON, Jamaica — Relatives of Khajeel Mais, the 17-year-old boy who was shot dead in July 2011, have cancelled their planned march to the courtroom for today’s start of the trial into his murder.

The accused, businessman Patrick Powell, is set to be tried in the Home Circuit Court for the teen’s shooting death.

Khajeel’s sister, Kimberly Mais, said in a video posted to Instagram that the march, which was scheduled for a 10:00 am start time from the gas station across from Heroe’s Circle in Kingston, has been cancelled.

She explained that the reason for the march was to ensure a timely start to the trial into her brother’s shooting death.

“There has been a guarantee that the case will start tomorrow (Wednesday) but there will be implications if we go ahead and proceed with the walk,” Mais said. “So, not to jeopardise the case, we have taken the stance not to have the walk done tomorrow (Wednesday).”

However, she did ask that people continue to pray for her family and pray that justice is served.

In a previous post to social media platforms, Mais had appealed for public support in the form of a peaceful march to the courtroom where the trial is scheduled to begin today.

Khajeel was shot in the head while travelling in a taxi, which bumped into the rear of a BMW X6 sports utility vehicle Powell was allegedly driving.
