Inter-zone round continues today with 16 matches
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Five top-of-the-table clashes will highlight today’s second round of matches in the inter-zone round of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition as teams race for places in the quarter-finals and the FLOW Super Cup competition.
The top two teams from each of the eight groups will qualify for the next round of the daCosta Cup, but only the winners of the groups will qualify for the FLOW Super Cup against the top eight teams in the Manning Cup competition.
A lot will be riding on today’s results as teams could book spots in the quarter-finals but none will be able to secure places in the lucrative FLOW Super Cup and teams can have their hopes severely dented or even dashed.
Today, Cornwall College will take an 11-game winning streak into a Zone One game against Petersfield in a grudge match at Jarrett Park; defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Lennon High meet in Zone Three; Clarendon College take on Spalding in Zone Four; Ocho Rios and Fair Prospect meet in Zone Five, while newcomers and giant-killers Little London face Paul Bogle High in Zone Eight.
Three of these games are repeat of inter-zone matches from last year, while former champions Rusea’s High and Dinthill Technical are also hoping to extend winning starts.
Additionally, Zone Seven is wide open and has taken on an air of unpredictability after both games in the first round ended in draws.
STETHS will be hosting Lennon High at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex for the second-straight year but could find a tougher team than the one they beat 3-0 last year.
Lennon lead the group on goal difference after a comprehensive 4-0 win over Mile Gully, while STETHS just got by Holmwood Technical 1-0 in their game.
Except for their semi-final 2-1 win over then defending champions in the semi-finals, Lennon have come out worse in all their games against STETHS, managing only those two goals in 2010 in four meetings.
In addition to their 3-0 win last year, STETHS won by the same margin in 2013 and 2-0 in 2012.
Cornwall College, who lead Zone One on goal-difference, will be meeting Petersfield in the inter-zone round for the third-straight season and the teams have each won once.
Petersfield won a hotly contested game at Frome last year 4-3, avenging their 0-2 loss in 2014 and knocking Cornwall College out of the competition completely. The Montego Bay school will be seeking revenge on home soil in front of what is expected to be a largely pro-Cornwall College crowd.
On Wednesday, Cornwall eased to a 3-0 win over Cedric Titus, while Petersfield were pushed to the limit by Green Island High.
Clarendon College beat Spalding 1-0 last year and their come-from-behind 4-1 win over Manchester High on Wednesday could make them favourites against the Lynval Wilson-coached team today, despite a good win over Lacovia High.
Little London came up big on Thursday, with a gritty 3-2 win over a Garvey Maceo team that had not allowed a single goal over 900 minutes, coming from behind twice and will relish taking on Paul Bogle in front of home fans at Frome.
Little London got into their first inter-zone as one of two best third-placed teams and won their first-ever game outside of the parish of Westmoreland — they will be confident today to make it two wins in a row.
Ocho Rios High are one of the last teams to qualify, beating Brown’s Town on Tuesday but face a Fair Prospect team that scored a similar 3-1 win on Thursday.
Rusea’s High just got by Godfrey Stewart 1-0 on Wednesday and travel to Jarrett Park to take on St James High in the final game of a triple-header.
A win for Rusea’s today would see them move to within a point of winning the zone and qualify for the FLOW Super Cup for the first time, but they must be wary of a St James team that could bounce back from a flat performance in their 0-0 draw against Spot Valley on Wednesday.
Dinthill Technical are unbeaten all year and will take aim at newcomers, Steer Town Academy who will seek to play their first inter-zone game after Thursday’s match against Brimmer Vale was not played due to a waterlogged field at Highgate.
Dinthill Technical got by Port Antonio High 2-1, coming from behind on Wednesday, their closest margin of victory in 10 games played.
Zone Seven is still up for grabs, with all four teams on one point and today Glenmuir High and Vere Technical will get another chance to prove their pedigree when they clash at Juici Football Field in the second game of a double header.
The former champions are expected to advance from the group but came up short against Seaforth High and Bog Walk on Wednesday.
Seaforth and Bog Walk will meet at Dinthill where the winner could set themselves up for a surprise place in the quarter-finals.
