Walker Cup team of the week for Matchday 1
The start of this year’s Walker Cup was exactly what many envisaged. All four games had spectacular goals, brilliant plays and standout players who played their part in helping their team get through to the semifinal stages. These are the 11 players that made our teenAGE Walker Cup Team of the Week:Jahvanni Grant – Kingston CollegeMalik Howell – Jamaica CollegeRicardo Phillips – Haile SelassieJavain ‘Trigger’ Brown – Kingston CollegeNickashe Murray – Wolmer’s BoysOmar Thompson – Kingston CollegeShane Moodie – BridgeportOquin Robinson – Jamaica CollegeHamish Smith – Haile SelassieRashawn Mackison – Kingston College
Perhaps the only player on the Kingston College team to have had an in-depth knowledge of the opposition, having recently transferred from Wolmer’s Boys this past summer, Grant came up with three key saves during the penalty shootout, including the winning one from his former teammate and friend, Shemar Jemison, the Wolmerian custodian. Grant made up for an earlier error during the latter stages of the second half, which allowed Rivaldo English to score the equaliser for the boys from Heroes Circle. He was instrumental in KC’s now famous victory and will need to be once again when his team faces Bridgeport in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The right back is now one of the senior members of the Jamaica College football team in what is a fairly young squad this season. His performance on Saturday was exceptional, helping the team to achieve a 3-0 victory over Holy Trinity. His brilliant display was capped with a well-taken goal, after he capitalised on a poor clearance by the Trinity defence, slotting in a low effort in the bottom right hand corner.
If ever there was a success story in the making, it would be none other than the Haile Selassie football team. Phillips has been a key contributor to this story and excelled during their win over Excelsior on Saturday. He was dominant in the defence for Jeffery Maxwell’s team and scored his penalty in the shootout, which they went on to win 6-5 in sudden death.
The captain of the team, Brown epitomises what Kingston College is truly about this season. He was a wall in defence against Wolmer’s on Friday evening, intercepting almost every ball that came his way. He led the team magnificently into the semifinals of the competition and will be important if they are to win any trophies this season.
Nickashe was perhaps one of the few Wolmerians who stood out defensively in that enthralling match against Kingston College, which ended 2-2 in normal time. Fresh off his exploits with the U17 National team, Murray played his part in trying to stem a rampant KC attack that, at times, left the Wolmers defence wanting.
Thompson scored a deflected effort to put his team 2-1 ahead and was one of the main creative forces in the Kingston College attack. He dominated the left wing of KC’s midfield like a true maestro with his silky skills and dazzling dribbling that proved too much for the Wolmer’s defence.
Moodie scored one of the goals of the season in his side’s 2-0 win over Denham Town on Friday, with what was a superbly struck volley in the dying embers of the game. It was the midfielder’s second goal of the season and it helped to propel the Portmore based school within one match of reaching the finals of the competition.
Another captain who led by example this weekend, Robinson guided his team to a comfortable victory over Holy Trinity. His key pass to set up Howell for the third goal was the highlight of the match. His performance earned him the man of the match performance as he was excellent in running the midfield and creating chances for his team.
Smith was a standout performer in Haile Selassie’s win on Saturday after opening the scoring with a sumptuous free kick in the 42nd minute. His commanding style of play as well as his influence on the football field was important as the surprise entrants made their way past a very resilient Excelsior football team.
Inevitably getting on the score-sheet against Wolmer’s, his hold up play and excellent vision were also essential for his team and played a major role in achieving the win against the Wolmerians. His presence on the pitch was consistently troubling for the Wolmer’s defence and proved too much in the end as he managed to score his 19th goal of the season.
Ronaldo Brown – Jamaica College
Strength, technique and an eye for goal were all exhibited by Ronaldo Brown in JC’s win over Holy Trinity. His powerful header in the 22nd minute pretty much put the game out of reach for his former school. Brown, in his third season with the Hope Road institution, will be aiming to use his goals to further JC’s chances to win titles this season. Already, he is doing just that, as the team is now two games away from being crowned 2016 Walker Cup champions.
