Residents protest police killing of Santa Cruz man
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — The St Elizabeth police today reported that they have cleared a roadblock in Lacovia set by residents protesting the shooting death of a man by police in Santa Cruz on Monday.
The dead man has been identified as Kevin Wilson of Cuffee’s Pen and Middlesex in the parish. A police source told OBSERVER ONLINE that Wilson originally hails from St James.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which probes alleged excesses by the security forces, is probing the fatal shooting.
Police reports are that a female officer close to the Santa Cruz town centre observed Wilson allegedly printing lead sheets — documents with names and addresses — which are usually used in lotto scamming operations.
The lawmen said the officer identified herself and sought to accost him.
The latter allegedly resisted, pulled a knife, and sought to disarm the officer.
He was shot in the process, police said.
Wilson was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
