LIPS OF 2016
Overtly Opaque
Lifestyle, Local Lifestyle, Style, Style Observer, Tuesday Style, Under the Dryer

LIPS OF 2016

With mere weeks to go to Christmas, what better time for glamazons and fashionistas to assess their best pouts. Be it glossy glamour or something a tad subtler — your Under the Dryer sqaud purses those lips in the right direction.

Overtly Opaque – This ultra-bold statement is achieved by using a heavily pigmented lipstick which makes the lips appear as if they are separated from the face. For the best results, use a colour which is in contrast to your skin tone. This trend was spotted on the runways for fall 2016-2017.

Peachy Peach – A subtle trend that adds the right amount of oomph to any outfit. Perfect for most complexions. Keep the look fresh with the correct shade of peach that complements your skin tone and matches your shade of blush. If you are light-skinned, choose lighter shades, such as pale peach tints; if you are dark skinned, choose deeper shades, such as deep apricot and tangerine. These lips were seen on the runways, and in quite a few editorials for the year.

Barely-there nude – The trick to this trend is finding a shade of nude that is slightly darker than your natural lips. Add a bit of gloss to elevate the look and make it seem more sophisticated. This look was seen all across the red carpets of 2016 on celebs who opted for dramatic gowns but chose to keep it minimal on the cosmetics.

Glossy Gothic- Glossy Gothic is a vintage look inspired by English fashion designer Gareth Pugh, who opted for darker shades on the runway, but added some gloss which made the lips appear smaller. This look has resurfaced on the runway, making its début in his fall 2016 collection and on the lips of supermodels and celebs such as Kendall Jenner and Rihanna.

Vampy Glam – Bold enough to make a statement, but tame enough to wear to work, this wine-coloured trend has been spotted on all skin tones, from the fairest porcelain to the deepest mocha. Get the look with a mixture of a black liner and a blood red lipstick. Seen at the Christian Dior fall 2016 collection and on celebs such as Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift.

Rosy Nude – This trend is for those who prefer a pink undertone but still want to keep it simple. The rosy nude can be worn with a gloss or matte finish and accomplished using your shade of nude mixed with a shade of baby pink. Celebs like Kim Kardashian have been seen sporting this look.

Brown Lips – Made popular by Kylie Jenner with her new Brown Sugar Lip Kit earlier this year, this lip trend can be worn with either a matte or glossy finish. Although many have been hesitant to give this look a try, those who have dared to, have fallen in love.

#BOLDLIPSFORSICKLECELL – Birthed by American Shamonica Wiggins, and embraced locally by Annabelle Nunes, the voice and face of sickle cell anaemia in Jamaica, this movement which aims to educate and improve the awareness of sickle cell, created a huge wave across social media.

Classic Red – Red lipstick should not be considered a trend, but a donnée for cosmetics of all time. This classic look is one that never goes out of style, as it complements most everything and anything. Spotted — everywhere — for the last couple of decades.
