Volcanoes beat Hurricanes for first win, Hamilton hits century
ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) — Resurgent Windward Islands Volcanoes marched confidently to their first victory of the Regional Four-Day Championship when they overwhelmed Leeward Islands Hurricanes by 94 runs on the fourth day of the fourth -round match at Windsor Park here on Monday.
Captain Liam Sebastien grabbed four wickets in a destructive spell that threw Hurricanes’ run chase into turmoil as the visitors were bowled out for 273, significantly short of the 338 winning target set by the homeside.
Volcanoes victory ends a winless streak and overshadows Jahmar Hamilton’s third first class century which represented the main resistance to the rampaging Volcanoes.
Earlier, powerful half-centuries from Tyrone Theophile and Sunil Ambris propelled the Windwards to a mammoth second-innings total of 333 for eight, and a huge target for the Leewards.
Resuming from their overnight score of 311 for six, the Windwards lost two more wickets before declaring 22 runs later with the clear intention of pressing for an outright win.
Theophile departed on the third day for 96, but Abris, who was 84 overnight, inched seven runs closer to his century before becoming the first of Gavin Tonge’s two victims of the day.
Abris, who only hit three fours, faced 108 balls in an innings which lasted for 197 minutes.
Chasing the 338 target set by the Windwards, the Leewards were given a solid start with an opening stand of 52 between Kieran Powell and Montcin Hodge.
However, Kyle Mayers removed Powell for 43 and shortly after dismissed Akeem Saunders cheaply, as Leewards stumbled to 62 for two.
Hamilton, meanwhile, was batting through the innings as wickets tumbled around him.
He scored 125, hitting 12 fours and three sixes in his 200 minutes at the crease.
Hamilton dominated an 86-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Chesney Hughes, who scored 42 and looked on as Sebastien carved through the middle order by claiming his four wickets in successive dismissals.
Sebastien, who was voted Man of the Match, finished with figures of four for 67, including seven maidens, removing Rahkeem Cornwall for 18, Jacques Taylor for the same score, Hayden Walsh for four and Tonge for seven, as Hurricanes imploded.
Mayers and Shillingford picked up two wickets each.
