Two Chinese businessmen arrested for customs, trademark breaches
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Police assigned to the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC) in a joint operation with Jamaica Customs arrested two Chinese nationals for breaches of the Consumer Protection and Trademark acts and the Customs Act.
The police raids took place in the parishes of Kingston, Clarendon and St James on Monday and Tuesday,
On Monday, December 12, officers executed search warrants in the Newport West area of Kingston where they seized the following items:
• 131 assorted brands of tasers
• 3 boxes of Green Leaf mosquito coils
• 188 boxes of roach baits
No one was arrested in connection with this seizure.
Some hours later, the officers say they went to Clarendon where 100 cartons of assorted cigarettes were seized. Forty-five-year old Yi Young Liv, a businessman of Manchester Avenue, May Pen, Clarendon, was charged for breaches of the Consumer Protection Act and the Customs Act.
The police say he is scheduled to appear before the Clarendon Parish Court on Thursday, January 12, 2017.
In St James on Tuesday, officers executed search warrants at two wholesales in Montego Bay where they seized 1,335 pairs of Converse footwear; 440 pairs of Nike footwear; eight Jansport bags; 136 boxes of Nike slippers; 119 Nike Barcelona Jerseys, and 14 boxes of Nike socks.
In connection with this seizure, 32-year-old Shif Tu Huang of Mango Walk Drive, Montego Bay, St James was charged for breaches of the Trademark Act and Consumer Protection Act. He is scheduled to appear before the St James Parish court on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.
The police say that all the items seized have a cumulative estimated street value of $11 million.
