THE grandmother of Alisa Garey, the 20-year-old woman who was killed, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend in Ocho Rios Wednesday afternoon, is upset that the young woman was murdered minutes after she made a report at the police station that he had threatened her.

A distressed Laney McFarlane said her granddaughter had just left the Ocho Rios Police Station when the incident occurred.

Garey and her mother had gone to the police station to make a report that the accused had threatened to kill her. The police reportedly took her report and called the accused man, also 20 years old, who was also in Ocho Rios. The police spoke to them both and warned the accused before they left the station.

Less than 100 metres from the police station, in the vicinity of a supermarket, the man allegedly carried out his threat, stabbing Garey in the chest twice.

“Mi blame the boy, and me blame the police; the boy [was] reporting on condition of bail. Hold him fi 24 hours,” a distressed McFarlane said. She believes the police could have done more to prevent her granddaughter’s death.

McFarlane said Garey met her killer about two years ago when they formed a friendship; however, she decided to end the relationship in recent times because of his modus operandi.

She claimed that after breaking off the relationship, the accused had issued threats to both Garey and family members, noting that Wednesday’s report was not the first one made to the police.

McFarlane was also upset that when her granddaughter was stabbed persons took time to make a video of the incident instead of assisting to take the young woman to the hospital.

“I see the video where she crying (Garey’s mother) and saying ‘unnu help me, unnu no see seh he stab mi pickney,” McFarlane said. She is also angry at the way her daughter was transported to the hospital.

“They [just] throw her in the van back,” she said, adding that the ride to the hospital for her granddaughter was a rough one. She said the most suitable mode of transportation should have been an ambulance.

“The police were sloppy in carrying out their duties,” she said.

Garey was pronounced dead at the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital.

Residents reportedly set upon the accused man, who ran from the scene, inflicting several wounds before he was rescued by the police. He has since been hospitalised under police guard.

Garey’s mother, who witnessed her death, has been inconsolable since. McFarlane said her daughter shared a very close relationship with Garey.

“Things that she no talk about with anyone else, she talk about with her (Garey),” she said.

The grandmother said one of the best gifts she had was taken away from her, as she spoke about the love for Garey.

“Lisa was a gem. She was loving, sweet, kind and very entertaining ,” McFarlane said. “Any time a me birthday she fix me special dinner; she fix me hair and she do me nails,” McFarlane said.

McFarlane said, too, that her granddaughter always took an interest in her well-being.

She added that although Garey was only 20 years old she was mature and could converse with anyone on any topic.

The death of her granddaughter is even more traumatic for McFarlane as it brought back memories of the death of her eldest daughter, who was killed in St Catherine 15 years ago and her 11-year-old grandson, who died two years ago.

Garey died leaving five brothers and two sisters.
