Suspected cocaine smuggler dumps liquor in airport bin
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A British man, who the police suspect dumped two bottles of liquor in a garbage bin at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) and replaced them with bottles containing cocaine, was on Monday arrested.
The accused, who the police did not name, is said to be an office porter from Birmingham, England.
The police began their sleuth about 5:00 pm after reportedly finding a bottle of white rum and a bottle of ginger wine in a garbage bin during a routine bathroom check.
It is said that a team of detectives from the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Narcotics Division conducted a detailed passenger check during which they identified the man who was in possession of a liquor box with bottles which did not match the names of those purchased on his receipt.
The bottles were instead labelled rum cream and contained a substance suspected to be liquid cocaine.
The man will be formally interviewed in the presence of his attorney and is expected to be charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine and taking steps preparatory to export cocaine.
