SINCE its inception six years ago, Kingston-based Rebel Sound System has been steadily making a name for itself on the teenage party circuit.

Its team members however, believe their recent nomination in the Youth View Awards (YVAs) for Favourite Sound System is testament to their hard work.

“It has finally paid off. We are happy for the recognition from the fans who have been with us,” said Javid “DJ Insaneo” Skeene, who along with Shamari “DJ Antsman” McCoy, Kevaunie “DJ Kevez” Nichol, David “DJ Ovadose” Beckford, Rory “DJ Unruly” Williams and Jason “DJ Quarrie” Quarrie comprise the six-member sound.

Formed in December 2011, Rebel Sound is known for its delivery of high energy music and versatility.

“Musically, we are known for our special delivery of great hits, various set and can have the crowd singing and dancing to their favourite music selections right through the night. What sets us apart from the rest is our versatility, experience, vibrance, knowledge in our song selection and juggling style,” Skeene added.

Skeene spoke about some of the challenges they faced in the early years.

“The difficult part was finding bus fare to go to the event and after playing late at night without pay having to find taxi fare to go home. The easy part was when people started knowing who Rebel Sound was and bookings started coming in and we were getting paid,” he said.

Some of the gigs that the sound has played include 11:59, Fashion Overboard, Black Rain, Mugs, Velocity, Plush, Drinks in Paradise and Soca Invasion.

“It’s a great feeling to be nominated for the YVAs and we are looking forward to taking home the award,” Skeene added.

The YVAs are scheduled to take place on February 18 at the National Indoor Sports Arena. The other nominees in the Favourite Sound System category are Stone Love, Chromatic, Bass Odyssey, Coppershot and CD Fantasy.
