Veronica Campbell Brown’s name has been synonymous with history, and the highly decorated athlete is hoping to add to her credentials at this year’s World Championships.

Campbell Brown, who has earned a total of 46 medals in her illustrious career, inclusive of 27 gold, 16 silver, and 3 bronze, described her season last year as fairly good, despite failing to make the 200m final at the Rio Olympic Games.

However, the five-time Olympian did leave the South American country with one piece of silverware, as she teamed up with Elaine Thompson, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Christania Williams to cop silver in the 4x100m relays.

Campbell Brown’s fastest times of 10.83s and 22.97 for the 100m and 200m last year are way below her best of 10.76 and 21.74 — times that rank her as the fourth and third-best Jamaican in both events.

At 34, many critics would say that her time to shine has long gone, but Campbell Brown, known for her sheer determination, natural talent and work ethic, believes there is enough left in the tank for one last hurrah.

The eight-time Olympic medallist pointed out that her training is now in full swing, as she remains steadfast in the bid to improve her craft.

“Training is going well. Just like last year, I started out well for the most part and my season ended well. I was pleased because I did well up until I had a slight setback which derailed me, but so far things have been going well for the 2017 season and I have high hopes that it will be a lot better than 2016,” Campbell Brown, who is one of only nine athletes to win world championships at the youth, junior, and senior level of an athletic event, told the Jamaica Observer in a recent interview.

“I just want to continue improving technically because right now my main aim is working on being more efficient when I run, to try and maximise my talent. I am training for the double right now so that is my mind -set but things could change throughout the rest of the season. We are not certain, but right now the double is what we are focusing on,” she added.

Having worked her way through the ranks to achieve greatness, the Clark’s Town, Trelawny native has displayed immense support to young girls through her VCB Foundation, which provides financial aid to girls at the secondary level, ensuring that they complete high school.

For the last six years, her foundation has been supporting girls at her alma mater Vere Technical High and also at Irwin High, Troy High, and St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) through mentorship, motivational activities and scholarship awards.

She recently hosted a second successful staging of the VCB Foundation 5K run in Hayes, Clarendon.

“I am grateful for the support that we got and I am glad that there are people that share my passion for giving back, and they came out and supported us. We hope to continue growing and reach as many girls as we can through the funds that we raise,” explained the double Olympic 200m champion, who gives a portion of the proceeds from one of her competitive races every year to finance the work of the foundation.

She continued: “So far the girls that were in the programme did very well because they graduated, and the new girls are now doing well. So we are pleased with the work that we are doing and we are happy that the ladies in the programme are really living up to our standard in terms of working hard towards achieving greatness.
