Trump administration looks forward to working closely with new Haitian President
WASHINGTON, United States (CMC) — The Donald Trump administration in the United States says it looks forward to working closely with Haiti’s new President Jovenel Moïse who was inaugurated as the 58th president of the French-speaking Caribbean country earlier this week.
“We look forward to working with Haiti’s newly elected president, as well as leadership at all levels of government, as they work to ensure Haiti’s stability and prosperity,” said Acting Spokesperson Mark C Toner in a message from the US Department of State
“The United States reaffirms our engagement with the people and Government of Haiti.”
“The Haitian people deserve to have democratically elected leaders,” he added, stating that Tuesday’s “inauguration of a democratically elected president allows Haiti to return to democratic and constitutional rule.”
Moise, 48, whom former Haitian President Michel Martelly hand-picked as his Bald Heads Party (PHTK) candidate, won with nearly 56 per cent of the votes cast in the November 20 election.
Concerning the Diaspora, the Haitian President has promised to seek parliamentary representation by having one senator and three members of the lower house.
There are approximately 915,000 Haitians primarily in the states of Florida and New York.
