Kingston, Birmingham to sign twin city partnership
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The cities of Kingston and Birmingham in Alabama are to sign a twin city partnership aimed at strengthening municipal relationships.
According to a release from Kingston and St Andrew Corporation, The official signing of a “Sister City partnership” will take place at the Chambers of KSAC on Wednesday.
“The sister city partnership with the city of Birmingham will be the third such partnership for Kingston and will make Kingston the first Caribbean sister city in the Birmingham network,” Mayor of Kingston, Senator Delroy Williams said.
Mayor of Birmingham, Dr William Bell, and representatives from the City of Birmingham are expected to visit the island today and depart Friday.
Williams, in the release, noted that Kingston has several untapped resources with Sister Cities International.
“It is an objective of my vision for this city to improve our bilateral relations with cities across the world in order to foster mutually beneficial partnerships of culture, local economic development, business, expertise and education,” he said.
“With 2017 being the 60th anniversary of the Sister Cities International Organization I deem it imperative that Kingston reintegrates itself in the global community in efforts to attract investments and network. Consequently we have re-established Kingston as an affiliate of this global network of over 600 cities in 136 countries,” added Williams.
During the visit Bell and his delegation are slated to visit several sites across Kingston, including the Ward Theatre, Port Royal, University of the West Indies and the Bob Marley Museum.
