Third World among the headline acts for ‘To Mom With Love’

In terms of music, 1976 was a landmark year for reggae. It saw the release of outstanding albums by Bob Marley and The Wailers (Rastaman Vibration), Bunny Wailer (Blackheart Man) and Peter Tosh (Legalize It).

The self-titled album by Third World was also released in 1976. Released three years after the band formed in Kingston, it was the most eclectic of what are regarded as four of reggae’s greatest works.

Third World performs at ‘To Mom With Love’ on May 10 at the AC Hotel in Kingston, along with Marcia Griffiths, American Rhythm And Blues singer Glenn Jones, Robert Minott and Nesta.

Minott, a longtime Third World fan, described them as a “special group” who appeal to a broad audience.

“They’re a great band, I’ve been listening to Third World for years. I even did a song with Bunny Rugs,” he told Observer Online.

Buggy Rugs was Third World’s lead singer from 1977 to his death in 2014. He sang on their biggest hits including Now That we Found Love, Try Jah Love and Committed.

In January, guitarist Stephen “Cat” Coore, the band’s co-founder, died at age 69. Keyboardist Ibo Cooper, its other co-founder, died in 2023.

To Mom With Love has two shows. The first starts at 1 pm, with the second scheduled for 7 pm.
