KC’s Matherson impresses at Carifta trials
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Kingston College’s Jhevaughn Matherson clocked a very comfortable 10.25 seconds to romp the boys’ Under-20 100 metre final at the Carifta Trials at the National Stadium on today.
Matherson, a second year Class One athlete, threw down the gauntlet for what can be expected at the ISSA Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships later this month.
His time, clocked in a positive 1.6 metres per second wind speed equalled his personal best achieved on this very same stage last year.
Jelani Walker (10.36) running unattached was second and Ashanie Walker (10.52) of St Catherine was third.
The Girls’ Under-20 event was won by Kasheika Cameron of Edwin Allen in 11.49 seconds in a positive 1.9 metres per second wind speed. St Jago’s Aneka Brissett (11.54) and Renee Shaw (11.59) of Excelsior were the runners-up.
Meanwhile, another Edwin Allen standout, Kevona Davis, clocked an impressive personal best of 11.43 seconds to capture the Girls’ Under-18 dash.
Davis running in a wind speed of positive 1.1 metres per second lowered her previous best of 11.6 seconds to win ahead of the 14-year-old American Brianna Williams (11.66) and Michae Harriott (11.70) of Holmwood Technical.
Calabar’s Tyreke Wilson was also impressive in victory in the Boys’ Under-18 event crossing in 10.57 seconds after looking across on competitors some 10 metres out. Aided by a positive 1.3 metres per second wind speed, Wilson won ahead of Michali Everett (10.66) of Jamaica College and Xavier Nairne (10.69) of Wolmer’s Boys School.
