ONLINE POLL RESULT: Phillips not expected to be better PNP president than Simpson Miller
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Fifty-three per cent of 3,162 respondents to a recent OBSERVER ONLINE poll said they did not expect Dr Peter Phillips to be a better People’s National Party (PNP) president than Portia Simpson Miller.
Phillips became the party president on March 26, replacing the party’s first female president Portia Simpson Miller.
He ascended to leadership unchallenged after Simpson Miller announced her intention to leave the post. The 67-year-old former minister of finance took the oath of office as Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition today, and is expected to begin the reconciliation of a seemingly fractured party marred by infighting over the past year.
Phillips is also expected to re-energise the country’s youth in a bid to attract them to the party as well as lead an astir Opposition.
Forty-six per cent of respondents to the poll said they expected Phillips to be a better party president.
