Racing fans were left in shock and some in disbelief. Even at the distance of six furlongs (1,200 metres), many racing fans were firmly committed to the view that Seeking My Dream was unstoppable in the Lady Geeta Trophy, until Campesino proved otherwise on Saturday.

Campesino, trained by Philip Feanny and ridden by Robert Halledeen, stormed to victory in a Stakes record- equalling time of 1:11.1 seconds. For Feanny it was a case of having a plan and fulfilling that plan.

“I think that he (Campesino) ran very well. With all things considered, he ran a truly good race. Seeking My Dream is a wonderful racehorse, but ours worked perfectly for us and we won and that is the most important thing.

The plan was to hold him (Seeking My Dream) on the rails and not to let him out and that is what happened,” Feanny said. It was a well-deserved victory for Campesino (Compadre – Yaella) who, despite his seven years, continues to make vast improvement.

Campesino broke well, then was steadied in second position behind Gary Glitter (Chalwick Budhai) with Seeking My Dream (Omar Walker) just a neck away in third.

Campesino drew alongside Gary Glitter at the top of the lane and both were locked in a stirring stretch duel, but Campesino proved the stronger of the two and edged away to score by half a length.

Gary Glitter proved beyond doubt that he is more than capable of handling the top horses and is probably the most improved horse in training at this time. A really encouraging run by Gary Glitter.

Seeking My Dream, who was burdened with top weight of 57.0kgs, hugged the inside rails and got a perfect run turning for home, but was outdone by the top two and finished third ahead of the fast-finishing Brawn.

The win by Campesino was his third for the season, thereby keeping his unbeaten record. Owner Howard Hamilton was in a bubble at the end of the race.

“Excellent racehorse and it was an excellent performance. He was very well trained by Philip [Feanny] and for a seven-year-old to be running this way, is certainly indicates an exceptional racehorse.

“I didn’t expect Seeking My Dream to step into six furlongs and I don’t know why the trainer put him in the race, but he knows best.

Going six furlongs, I knew we will always be in the money. Campesino is at his best right now,” Hamilton said with his usual confidence.
