PSOJ welcomes removal of ban on corned beef
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) has welcomed the move by the Government to remove the ban on corned beef.
The PSOJ in a release today said it is pleased that the ban has been lifted and that the affected companies can now resume the sale of their products thereby allowing consumers to once again feel confident in the consumption of corned beef.
It said “corned beef has always been and remains a staple for Jamaican consumers. The recent ban therefore had not only impacted product sales, but also affected the consumption habits of consumers”.
The organisation said it also took note that at least one company, GraceKennedy Limited, has expressed that it is investigating the feasibility of local production of corned beef, which is a positive move for the Jamaican economy and consumers.
The PSOJ also expressed confidence that their member companies are committed to the continued provision of quality goods and services to the public, and take the safety of consumers very seriously.
Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Karl Samuda announced the discontinuation of the ban on the importation of corned beef from Brazil yesterday.
The ministry had imposed the ban after an emergency meeting on March 20 following reports from Brazilian authorities that several major Brazilian meat processors had been “selling rotten beef and poultry”.
