Winning the 1,000 Guineas as a jockey, trainer
After winning the 1,000 Guineas as a jockey aboard Sky Train in 1982, Fitzroy “Pumpkin’ Glispie had the rare distinction of winning the same race as a trainer when he saddled She’s Traditional to a 99-1 upset in the 38th running of the 1,000 Guineas on April 7, 2012. Sky Train, who was trained by Colin Chong, won the one-mile event in 1:39.0 minutes.
In the 2012 edition of the 1,000, Star Flyer (Dick Cardenas) appeared to be the winner at the furlong pole until Trevor Simpson urged on She’s Traditional who came with a strong run, closing on the outside under heavy left-hand whipping, to get home by a short head in 1:40.3 minutes.
“The feeling of winning the 1,000 Guineas for the first time as a trainer was amazing. It was a great feeling and it was a great moment for me as well. I will always remember that day when I won the 2012 Jamaica 1,000 Guineas with She’s Traditional.
“It was a great performance by She’s Traditional at the time. She did what nobody expected her to do, and that was to win the 1,000 Guineas, as she went off at odds of 99-1,” Glispie declared.
Based on her preparation coming into the race, Glispie said that he knew She’s Traditional would be in the money.
“To be honest, I wasn’t confident that I was going to win, but I was sure that she was going to run a big race based on how she was training. In the race that she ran prior to the 1,000 Guineas, she showed some positive signs.
“She responded well to the training and she was doing exactly what I wanted her to. I knew that she would run a good race and she ended up winning the race. I was and still am so happy and grateful for that,” Glispie said.
