MY KINGSTON GARTH WALKER SUNDAY APRIL 09
What are your earliest memories of Kingston?
At home on a Sunday, in Stony Hill, listening out for the fudge man’s cry, “Fudge, nutty-buddy and zuper-duper.”
What’s the most memorable meal that you have enjoyed in Kingston?
My first time at seafood restaurant Gloria’s in Port Royal, as a Jamaica College student, was amazing.
What would you do if you were mayor of Kingston for a day?
As mayor, I would focus on regulating street vending and ridding the city of congestion.
What would be your recommendations to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
Definitely go to Bounty Sundays, Ribbiz UltraLounge at Barbican Centre, and get some good Devon House ice-cream.
Is the international accusation of ‘fake news’ ultimately a cry for the media to re-evaluate its working model?
I think so. With the evolution of social media and smart-phones everyone has become a journalist in their own right. Traditional media needs to focus on doing more investigative journalism to ensure that the credible aspects of the market drown out the growing fake-news saga.
Is live-streaming an underutilised gold mine for generating content?
Live-streaming is really underutilised with the dissemination of content versus generating of content and is an area that
Business Access TV has embarked on and will be investing in heavily in the third quarter of this year.
What demographic representations are still missing from our airwaves?
We are leaving out our young people, between the ages of 18 and 25. I still believe that millenials are being underserved with business content and distribution as they consume information on-the-go, and more defined programming needs to be created to pique their interest.
Is content mobility worth the headache?
It shouldn’t be viewed as a headache. I believe it’s one of the necessary growing pains in moving forward in the technological age. Digital has taken over and if we don’t try to meet our consumers where they are, and to cater to their consumption habits then we would be failing at achieving our mandate.
What will be your next big creative risk?
I am working on a very strategic move for
Business Access TV that’s going to be a game-changer for the company, domestically, and for the Caribbean region on a whole.
The makings of a mogul — is heavy the head that wears the crown?
So true. The expectations are high and so are the stakes. Waking up each day with the demand to keep relevant, creative and grow is not an easy task.
