The result of the 2000 Guineas 2017 did not help to establish a dominant colt or gelding among the three-year-olds. The win on Saturday by Fearless Samurai by a decreasing margin of half-a-length confirmed his slight edge at this time, but the others are catching up fast.

FIRST: Fearless Samurai – The burst of speed byFearless Samurai leaving the three-furlong marker formed the catalyst for his win. That three-to four-length injection of tempo left rivals in his wake and was enough in the end forFearless Samurai to last home under strong hand-pumping. There is no doubt after the Guineas that Fearless Samurai is showing clear signs that it is going to be problematic for him in the longer Classic races to come, but thus far, he has been answering all the calls made on him. It is going to be very interesting to see how he copes when going longer than a mile. Fearless Samurai is blessed with pace, that one lift, which can be a telling factor in almost any race. A win yes, but only just under a real good ride from Omar Walker.

SECOND:Market Force — Gave a truly brave effort and just failed in the end. Market Force’s run in the 2000 was only his third, and with natural improvement expected there is no doubt he is going to progress.Market Force stayed with pace but when Fearless Samurai made his decisive move , Market Force did not respond in time, thus allowing his opponent to gain a significant advantage. Both horse and rider (Bebeto Harvey) will learn for this race. Tried and tried in the straight but Fearless Samurai had already found his roost. Market Force has now joined the upper echelons of the three-year-old colts and gelding ranks, and is going to be a contender in the other Classic races as well as the Governor’s Cup. Well done.

THIRD: Sotomayor – Faith has been restored. After two dismal outings this season,Sotomayor racing against his own showed that he is coming to come. He is not there as yet but now, hope springs eternal.Sotomayor, after racing well behind the leaders and simply left with too much to do, did not quit. Instead, he ran on strongly in the last two furlongs to earn third place. With the Lotto Classic, the Derby, and the St Leger to come, Sotomayor may well redeem himself. Remember that the top three-year-old of last year, Bigdaddykool finished fourth in the 2000, and as the races got longer the better it was for Bigdaddykool. Do not write off Sotomayor as the Bigdaddykool factor may well come into place.

FOURTH: Radical — Was too far off the pace and was not a threat in the straight. Will be more effective going longer but needs a bit more urging at the start of his races.

FIFTH:Twilight Dreams — Did really well and must have provided inspiration for his trainer.

SIXTH:Western Warrior — Could not reproduce the form of the Prince Consort.

SEVENTH: Loose Cannon – As expected, led a merry chase and that was it.

EIGHTH: Wong Don — In the ‘wong’ race.

NINTH:Night Light — Never a winning factor.

TENTH: Uncle Vinnie — Never a winning factor.

ELEVENTH: Rambunctious Links – Never a winning factor.

TWELFTH:Secret Traveller — Was around the front end a bit then faded.

THIRTEENTH: Foot Soldier — Had a long and torrid march.

FOURTEENTH: Akash — Never a winning factor.

FIFTEENTH:Don Chassis — Had problems in the gates.

SIXTEENTH:Balazo — Tried but not against these.
