Gov’t to distribute mosquito nets to pregnant women
KINGSTON, Jamaica — According to the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), Managing Director Omar Sweeney and Member of Parliament for West Kingston, Desmond McKenzie will tomorrow distribute mosquito nets to pregant women at the Tivoli Gardens Community Centre.
According to a JSIF release, the distribution is part of 1000 bed nets to be distributed in seven parishes to pregnant women to minimise exposure to the aedes aegypti mosquito, responsible for spreading diseases like Zika, Chik-V and dengue fever.
JSIF said 2500 specialized lids for covering water storage containers to prevent mosquito breeding will be distributed along with the nets.
The project is reportedly being implemented by JSIF, the health ministry and various community groups under the World Bank-funded Integrated Community Development Project.
The Government said that approximately 3,500 persons in 30 communities are expected to benefit directly from the project.
