ONLINE POLL RESULTS: No corned beef eating after March 20 ban
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Seventy-three per cent of the 1,692 respondents to a recent OBSERVER ONLINE poll said they stopped eating corned beef after the Government imposed a ban on imports of the product from Brazil on March 20.
The ban was imposed in reaction to reports that producers in the South American country, which supplies almost all of Jamaica’s corned beef, were selling rotten beef and poultry.
The Commerce ministry sent a team to Brazil to conduct investigations and the ban was lifted after officials reported that they were satisfied with the information gathered.
The Sunday Observer this week reported that some Jamaicans are still sceptic about consuming corned beef despite the reassurance from the Government that it was safe to again eat the product.
Readers who say they continued to eat corned beef even after the ban made up 26 per cent of respondents.
