ONLINE READERS COMMENT: Give land to 55-y-o residents for Independence
Dear editor,
Five years ago the country celebrated its 50th independence anniversary and we, retired professionals wrote suggesting that an acre of Crown land be given to each of those born in 1962, as they are encouraged to grow something to develop the productive sector.
We write again and hope that thousands of acres of arable ‘idle’ land with available water will be given to the people who are 55 years old, and ready to work hard in agriculture.
We suggest the following for the 67,000 Jamaican babies born in 1962:
Give one acre of land to each of 55,000 able-bodied people who will put it in production to help the Jamaica Agriculture Society in each parish.
Give five acres of land to 55 residents born on August 6, 1962 and who will deal with agricultural pursuits — roughly four residents in each parish.
The land must be located in the parish of the selected citizen’s birth and they will work with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority, which ranks with the NHT and NHF in efficiency and performance.
“If is production wi want; production wi gway get.”
We appeal to the ministers of Agriculture, Culture and Water to put this local farm workers project in effect and call us, retired professionals, to help before the country celebrates its 55th Independence birthday.
