Steaming ‘Callaloo’ dominates with three winners
Former champion jockey Wesley “Callaloo” Henry used his skills and confidence to ride three winners to highlight the 10-race Grooms’ Day programme at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Henry’s winners included the Errol Waugh-conditioned Runjohnny Run, who made all convincingly to win the Grooms’ Association of Jamaica Trophy feature in fine style going 1,000 metres straight.
Runjohnny Run, the 9-5 favourite, won by two-and-a-half lengths over Sir Leyland Hall (Hakeem Pottinger) and Argument Done (Orlando Foster) in a quick 58.2 seconds. It was also the third-consecutive win for Runjohnny Run.
Henry’s other winners were Tropicaldepression for trainer Ryan Darby in the second race over 1,600 metres and Mr Cookie for trainer Terrence McWhinney in the fourth race over 1,400 metres.
With those winners Henry took his tally to 13 wins, which placed him in fourth position in the jockeys’ standing. Omar Walker, who was winless from five rides, leads on 32 winners ahead of Dane Nelson (currently in Canada) on 21 wins and Robert Halledeen on 14 wins. Halledeen had one winner in Uppa Tune, who won the third race.
Meanwhile, Gary Glitter, under the ever so-confident Rayan Wilson, romped home in the top-rated Lionel Rodney Open Allowance event.
Gary Glitter won by one-and-a-quarter lengths ahead of Crucial Appeal (Jevvanne Erwin), Soy El Señ (Dane Dawkins) and Royal Vibes (Jerome Innis) in that order.
Bred and owned by Gordon Lewis and trained by Dalton Sirjue, Gary Glitter (Deputy Glitters-True Virtue) ran the distance in 1:19.2 minutes, chasing splits of 23.3, 47.1 and 1:12.1 minutes.
Racing continues tomorrow (Easter Monday) with a 10-race programme featuring the Easter Sprint Cup, an Overnight Allowance event venturing over 1,100 metres for a purse of $1 million. First post is at 12:30 pm.
