KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator Ruel Reid this morning announced that $100 million has been allocated to University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona to help with financially challenged students.

“We are intervening on behalf of final year (students) too”, the minister added in a Twitter post.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness tweeted earlier this morning that Reid was reviewing the matter and will make an intervention. However, neither Reid nor Holness disclosed what that intervention would entail.

The Guild of Students’ yesterday reached out to the UWI Administration requesting a possible extension to the imposed deadline for the payment of outstanding fees.

The Guild said, in Twitter post, that it had requested the meeting in light of stipulations, which will see students being barred from taking their final examinations.

Yesterday was the last day for finalising undergraduate and graduate students to pay outstanding fees in order for them to sit final exams.

The UWI faced widespread backlash after reports of anxiety among some final year students over the prospect that they may not be able to sit their final exams if hundreds of thousands of dollars owed in tuition and other fees to the institution were not paid.
