#ShanghaiDL: Elaine runs world leading time
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson this morning won the Shanghai Diamond League 100 metre in a world leading 10.78 seconds. (-0.3 mps).
Thompson, the double Olympic sprint champion, continued her wonderful form with a dominating display and she destroyed a quality field by three to four metres.American Rio Olympic silver medallist, Tori Bowie, was some way back in a season’s best of 11.04 seconds with Ivory Coast’s Marie Josee Ta Lou third with her season’s best of 11.07.Jamaicans Veronica Campbell Brown and Christania Williams were sixth and eighth in 11.23 and 11.33 respectively.Thompson, who looked to be on course to break the Jamaican national record of 10.70 held jointly by herself and Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce, said she is looking forward to the World Championships.”I was happy with my preparation and the way I executed the race today. I made a great start and I was able to bring it home. I am pleased with the time,” said Thompson.”My aim now is to go back home and compete in the Jamaica Invitational later this month. From there it is all about preparing for the rest of the season and the World Championships,” she added.Meanwhile Olympic 110m hurdles champion. Omar McLeod held off Orlando Ortega of Spain and won in 13.09 (0.5 mps), just below his season’s best of 13.04 established on April 29.McLeod who got a good start and was challenged all the way by Ortega, found the extra burst of speed after the final hurdle and inched away for a very good win. Ortega was second in 13.15 with Xie Wenjun of China third in 13.31.Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment was just behind in fourth with a season’s best 13.35 after appearing to ease up at the line.Earlier, Jamaica’s Annsert Whyte finished seventh in the men’s 400m hurdles in a season’s best of 50.18 seconds. The event was won by American Bershawn Jackson in a new meet record of 48.63 seconds. South Africa’s Zyl LJ Van was second in 49.35 with Rasmus Magi of Estonia third in 49.38.Jamaica had three women in the 400m and they all achieved seasonal bests but they were no match for the Olympic champion Shaynae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas who won in a world leading 49.77. The lanky runner totally destroyed the field after a very fast first 200m.Veteran Novlene Williams-Mills was the best of the Jamaica trio finishing fourth in 51.45. Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby was fifth with 51.63 with Stephenie-Ann McPherson down in seventh with 51.97. American Natasha Hastings finished well for second in 50.74.Howard Walker
