Azeela aims to make his name
IT seemed like only yesterday that singjay Azeela was heading to studios like Arrows and Mixing Lab eager to get the attention of top producers.
That never happened in the 1990s when he started out as deejay Anxious. But three years ago he got a second chance at making a name in music with the Bull Bay Music company.That label produced his songs

My Life, which the 45-year-old artiste is currently promoting. According to Azeela, things are not as tough as the early days.“First time, if yuh don’t record fi someone like a King Jammys, yuh can’t mek it. But wid di Internet an’ different social media things change,” he reasoned.Bust It Up was among Bull Bay Music’s initial releases when the label launched in 2008. Financial difficulties put its operations on pause for a while, but they recently resurfaced with another batch of artistes and songs.Born Donald Valentine in Franklin Town, east Kingston, Azeela was raised in Bull Bay, a seaside town with a strong Rastafarian community.Influenced by Bull Bay stalwart Carl Dawkins, Dennis Brown, I Roy and Bob Marley, he was a regular performer on the local dance circuit with sound systems such as Emperor.Later he made the daily trek to Arrows at Windward Road, the centre for dub plates in Jamaica.“Arrows was di place to go if yuh waan start yuh career. Wi use to do dub plate fi put food pon di table,” said Azeela.He also had a stint in Vancouver, Canada, where he performed in nightclubs and basement parties to “build a vibe”.Global King and Bad Long Time are two of his other songs for Bull Bay Music.— Howard Campbell
