Discus showdown
The women’s discus throw at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association’s National Senior Championships in June is shaping up to be one of the ‘must watch’ events after Shadae Lawrence broke the national record with an effort of 62.59 metres on Sunday.
She accomplished the feat on the final day of the NCAA Big 12 Outdoor championships in Kansas, United States, to retain her title. The Kansas State second-year student smashed the previous national record of 62.07m set 16 days earlier by Kellion Knibb of Florida State University, who was retaining her title at the 123rd Penn Relays Carnival in Philadelphia. Both women have qualified for the IAAF World Championships in London in August and are both in the top 20 in the world. Lawrence is ranked number 15, while Knibb, who also retained her ACC title in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, is at number 19.Sunday’s big throw by Lawrence — which broke the Big 12 record of 59.15m set by Becky Breisch of the University of Nebraska in 2006 and the Rock Chalk Park record of 58.38m set in 2016 by Hannah Carson of Texas Tech — marked the third time the Jamaican national discus record was being broken in the past month.Knibb’s 62.07m set at the Penn Relays, also broke the 61.59m she did at a meet at Stanford, California, earlier in April, which was then a national record.Lawrence, Knibb and Tarasue Barnett all represented Jamaica at the Rio Olympics last year. Barnett, who has a season’s best 59.95m, is still short of the 61.20m qualifying mark for the World Championships. On Sunday, Lawrence went over the 60.00m mark three times in her four throws, and won the title by over five metres ahead of the second-placed athlete. She fouled her first and third throws but got into the final eight after a 54.86 effort on her second try, and effectively won the completion on her fourth throw of 60.85. Lawrence followed up with the national record 62.59, and then threw 61.31 on her final throw.
