I write with reference to the column entitled ‘Press freedom must be protected’, that was published in the May 14, 2017 edition of the Sunday Observer, and written by Mr Garfield Higgins.In his column, Mr Higgins has made a number of comments, regarding the radio serial, ‘the Fortunes of Flora Lee’, some of which are inaccurate.Mr Higgins’ claims are presented, among other things, in the following context: “Wilmot Perkins was fired from the now defunct Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) simply because he made comments which they did not like.It is a fact that when the PNP found out that (he) Perkins was benefiting from the monetary proceeds of the radio serial, ‘the Fortunes of Flora Lee’, written by his wife Elaine Perkins, that was aired on JBC, they halted the broadcast.”I am very disturbed by these statements because ‘the Fortunes of Flora Lee’ was, in fact, not written by Elaine Perkins but by my late mother Carmel Christie. At the time, the play had the widest listenership for any radio programme in the 30 years of radio history in Jamaica.For the avoidance of doubt, I must also state that my mother was in no way associated with the late Wilmot Perkins, and had no business dealings with him.Respectfully,Greg Christie
